Join Us

Membership of the Mothers' Union is open to anyone (male or female) who has been baptised in any Christian denomination and agrees with the Aims and Objectives of the Mothers' Union.  All MU members in our Diocese receive the national Mothers' Union magazine 'Connected' twice a year, and the MU prayer diary unless they have opted out of receiving mailings from Mary Sumner House.  We also have a regular Diocesan email newsletter.

There are several different membership options:

Branch membership

You will join a branch (group) which meets locally.  Most branches have monthly meetings which usually include a speaker or activity and worship and prayer.  Meetings may be held in a church hall or members' homes, community centre or cafe.  Some branches may choose to meet more or less frequently, or at other types of venues.  Branches may organise fundraising events, services and outings, and may also run their own local projects.  Most branches are closely involved with their local parish churches and communities.  Members may also support the Diocesan outreach projects such as knitting hats for seafarers or knitting for premature babies.  Branch membership costs £27 pa (2024) which is collected by your branch.

Diocesan membership

Most members pay their subscriptions to their Branch Treasurer but if there is no branch or a branch has become a Fellowship Group, subscriptions can be paid through the Diocesan Members rep, Sue Norrington.  She looks after Diocesan Members and sends out monthly mailings to them. Payment of the subscription also ensures that you receive your copies of “Connected” and the Prayer Diary from Mary Sumner House.

Sue sends out membership renewal forms to all Diocesan Members and to anyone wishing to move to this way of paying subscriptions. Payment can be made to Mothers’ Union by cheque or Direct Debit. Sue records the contact details for each Diocesan Member and then forwards any cheques to the Diocesan Treasurer.

Diocesan Members receive the Trustees Newsletter and a letter from Sue, each month. If a meeting in a nearby branch is of interest, they are welcome to attend at no further cost.

If you would like to know more about Diocesan Membership, please contact Sue Norrington on 01728 660280.

Indoor membership (IMPC)

This type of membership is for people who are not able to get to branch meetings. IPMC stands for 'Indoor Members' Prayer Circle'. You will be invited to pray for all MU projects, home and abroad and also for members who are sick or suffering. You will receive letters and MU magazines during the year. These members often have long histories of association with Mothers' Union and their prayer support is invaluable.  There is no membership subscription to pay.

How to join

If you are interested in finding out more about membership of Mothers' Union, please either contact us via the Contact Us page, talk to Linda Ginn (our Diocesan President) or contact your local Mothers' Union branch.  You are always welcome to visit a branch to find out more, or even visit several to find the best one for you.  If you would like to join as a Diocesan member then please contact Sue Norrington on 01728 660280.
