Mothers' Union has a long history of campaigning in support of women and family issues, and now we all have the chance to get involved simply by writing letters or emails!
Currently there is a new domestic abuse bill going through Parliament, but MU and the Anglican Communion want some changes made to the bill. For example migrant women should be able to get the same support if they are experiencing domestic abuse as settled women, universal credit payments should be shared between both partners not just given to one party.
So you can help by writing to your MP so that they know that constituents are interested in this area and in support of these changes. There is a draft letter which you can download and edit, or you can write your own. There is also a wealth of background information about the bill and what changes MU have requested - the OHCHR submission, joint evidence, MU CEO letter.
Some tips from Mary Sumner House on writing your letter/email:
·MPs get a huge amount of correspondence and their advisers won’t necessarily show them every item that comes in, but will pass to them the ones where the writer has clearly made an effort and not just cut and pasted a standard form.
·Do personalise the draft as much as you feel comfortable to!
·MPs willgive more attention to issues on which they receive large amounts of correspondence – so the more individual letters the better, although a letter from a group of members who live in the same constituency would also be powerful.
·Email is fine and normal – apparently, letters in the post have even more impact, because now so unusual.
