Prayer for October

In October we reflect on the Keys of the Kingdom, with this prayer and reflection from the MU Prayer Diary:

‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’

Luke 4:18-19 (NIV)

As we focus on prison ministry, we pray that we too would respond to Jesus’ call. We give thanks for the Mothers’ Union members who support prisoners, their families and later when the sentence ends, help them establish new beginnings.

Reflection: During a World Day of Prayer service, we were asked to look at our house key, and ask, ‘What does it say to you?’ The most frequent response was ‘security and safety’ as well as a scattering of ‘home, love and peace.’ One person wrote, ‘Keys of the Kingdom.’

How do we hold the ‘Keys of the Kingdom’ for ourselves and for others, especially people who have no place of safety and for the imprisoned in body, mind or spirit?
